FAQs

What is Giclée printing?

Giclée printing is a high-quality printing method used to reproduce digital or traditional artworks. It involves using specialized printers that spray tiny droplets of ink onto various types of archival paper or canvas. These printers can achieve a wide range of colors and produce detailed prints with exceptional clarity and precision.

The term "giclée" comes from the French word meaning "to spray," which refers to the inkjet printing process used in this technique. Giclée prints are typically created by scanning or photographing the original artwork at a high resolution to capture its intricate details and colors accurately.

What makes giclée prints unique is the combination of high-quality inks and archival-grade materials. The inks used are usually pigment-based, which ensures vibrant and long-lasting colors. Additionally, giclée prints are often produced on acid-free and archival-grade papers or canvas, which helps maintain their quality and durability over time.

Giclée printing has become popular among artists, photographers, and art enthusiasts because it allows for precise reproductions that closely resemble the original artwork. These prints can be produced in limited editions, signed, and numbered, making them desirable collectibles.

In summary, giclée printing is a top-notch method used to create high-quality reproductions of artwork, known for its exceptional detail, accurate colors, and longevity.

How do I take care of my Giclée canvas print?

  • Keep your print away from direct sunlight, or intense reflected light from mirrors, glass, etc.
  • Display your canvas print in a moisture-free environment.
  • Display your canvas at a safe distance from any sources of direct heat such as a fireplace or radiator.
  • Run a soft feather duster over the front and top of the piece periodically to remove settled dust.
  • Avoid using any form of liquid, chemical or spray products to clean your canvas.
  • For marks on the print, you can use a soft damp cloth to rub very gently over the area affected.
  • The flexibility of canvas material means that it can sometimes get dimpled, whether from handling or in transit during shipping. To remove these dimples, spray a mist of water on the back of the canvas. Then, either with a finger or paintbrush, gently rub the water into the surface of the canvas. Allow the canvas to dry and tighten to its original tautness.

How do you digitize a canvas painting for a print reproduction?

Paintings are documented using a professional grade camera and ensuring the artwork is evenly lit. In some instances, a special scanner is used to capture the image of the painting.

How does the framing process work?

  • Material selection: Choose a frame material that complements the artwork and fits your aesthetic preferences. Common options include wood, metal, or plastic frames.
  • Mounting: The print may be mounted onto a backing board or mat using archival tape or other adhesive materials. This step helps keep the print flat and prevents it from shifting within the frame.
  • Glazing: Place a protective glazing material, usually glass or acrylic, over the print to shield it from dust, UV rays, and other potential damage. UV-filtering glazing is particularly recommended to prevent fading and discoloration.
  • Frame assembly: Assemble the frame by carefully securing the print, matting, and glazing within it. This is typically done using small nails or screws and frame-specific hardware.
  • Hanging hardware: Attach appropriate hanging hardware, such as hooks or wire, to the back of the frame for easy and secure display on walls.

What types of frames are available?

Currently on offer are canvas floater frames.

What color frames are available?

How to choose a piece that is suitable to match its surroundings?

When selecting a painting and frame suitable for a room, there are several factors to consider to ensure a cohesive and harmonious aesthetic. Here are some steps to guide you through the process:

Consider the room's style and theme: Take into account the overall style and ambiance of the room. Is it modern, traditional, minimalist, or eclectic? Understanding the room's style will help you choose a painting and frame that align with the existing decor.

Size and proportion: Evaluate the available wall space and consider the size and proportion of the painting. A large artwork can make a bold statement, while smaller pieces can be grouped together or used as accents. Ensure that the painting's dimensions are proportionate to the wall it will occupy.

Color scheme and mood: Pay attention to the room's color scheme and the mood you want to create. Consider whether you prefer a painting that complements the existing colors or one that serves as a focal point with contrasting tones. Harmonize the colors of the painting with the room's palette to create a cohesive look.

Subject matter and style: Think about the subject matter and style of the painting. Determine whether you want a landscape, abstract, figurative, or still life piece. Choose a style that resonates with you and complements the room's overall vibe.

Lighting and positioning: Assess the room's lighting conditions and the placement of the artwork. Ensure that the painting will receive adequate lighting to showcase its colors and details. Position the artwork at eye level or in a location where it can be appreciated without obstruction.

Personal preference and emotional connection: Ultimately, choose a painting that speaks to you and evokes an emotional connection. Art is a personal expression, and selecting a piece that resonates with you will enhance your enjoyment of the space.

By considering these factors and finding a balance between personal taste and the room's design elements, you can select a painting and frame that harmonize with the room and create an aesthetically pleasing environment.

How to choose the right size for the space?

Choosing the right size artwork for a space involves considering the dimensions of the room, the available wall space, and the desired visual impact. Here are some steps to help you select the appropriate size:

Measure the wall space: Begin by measuring the area where you plan to hang your art. Note the width and height of the wall space to determine the maximum size that would fit well.

Consider the room's scale: Take into account the overall size of the room. If it's a small room, a large, oversized painting may overpower the space. Conversely, a small artwork may get lost in a large room. Aim for a cnavas size that complements the room's scale without overwhelming or underwhelming the space.

Create a focal point: Decide whether you want the piece to be a focal point or a subtle addition to the room. If you want it to stand out, consider choosing a larger size that draws attention and becomes a central element. For a more subdued effect, a smaller size or a grouping of smaller prints can work well.

Consider the furniture and layout: Take into account the furniture arrangement and placement in the room. If you plan to hang your artwork above a sofa, bed, or console table, ensure that it is proportionate to the furniture below.

Height and eye level: Hang your artwork at eye level for optimal viewing. The center of the artwork should typically be positioned at around 57-60 inches (145-152 cm) from the floor. Consider this when determining the height of the painting, especially if the room has tall ceilings.

Multiple artworks and arrangements: If you're considering multiple artworks or a gallery wall, plan the layout and arrangement. Experiment with different sizes, shapes, and orientations to create a visually pleasing composition. Ensure that the individual pieces work well together and complement the overall space.

Personal preference and visual impact: Ultimately, trust your instincts and personal preferences. Choose a painting size that resonates with you and makes the desired visual impact. Consider the emotions and atmosphere you want to create in the space and select a size that aligns with those intentions.

Remember that these guidelines are suggestions, and there are no strict rules. Flexibility and experimentation can lead to exciting and unique results. Feel free to adapt these steps based on your specific room, style, and artistic preferences.

How is the canvas print protected? What finishing method do you use?

For canvas prints we use ClearShield Type C Coating as a protective finish. Type C is formulated to be used over water-resistant canvas printed with pigmented inks. While the Epson UltraChrome K3 Inks are already UV resistant, the coating has some additional UV buffers as well, and when applied to the print, the finish can further protect it from scratching, finger prints, or smudging.
